The Pier Pit

Yesterday and today, Chris Teron and Mike Zeidler have hammered and pried out a hole 5 feet square and 2 more feet into the rock the backhoe left on Friday.

Hugh Pett showed up Sunday morning with great precision, just after the hard work was complete. He still had a steady hand, and was able to assist with the marking of the four corners of the observatory building. These were fixed by the location of the pit for the pier. It means some more overburden must be removed, hopefully this week.

The photo shows the building footings' locations, using the tape measures. The actual building is somewhat smaller, of course.

Based on the actual depth into the ground, and the rock conditions, Chris has slightly modified the design of the footings, resulting in less concrete being required. The structure of the concrete base for the pier is also a little simpler.
